I-5/Skagit River Bridge News

Update 9/11/13: The Department of Transportation is planning on installing the permanent repairs the night of Friday, September 13 at 7:00 pm through 7:00 am Saturday morning, September 14.

Update 6/19/13: The bridge is open! As of 6:00 am, both northbound and southbound lanes are open to traffic. The speed limit is reduced to 40 MPH across the bridge.

Update 6/17/13: Repairs to the bridge are taking a little longer than expected, and the bridge is now expected to be open sometime later this week (June 20-22). We will keep you posted.

Update 6/5/13: Webcam views are now available for the bridge and traffic around the various detours. Go here to see the webcam views.

Update 6/4/13: Bridge reconstruction has started! Governor Inslee estimates that the temporary fix should be completed by the middle of June. However, the detours noted below take only a few minutes longer to get to Anacortes, and go through some beautiful countryside. If you're not in a hurry, we'd recommend the detours!

Maps for alternate routes coming northbound are at the bottom of this page. There is no need for a southbound (from Bellingham/Vancouver BC area, as it is clear sailing until Exit 230/Route 20 west to Anacortes.


I-5 Bridge Detour Northbound

You can also take Exit 221 for Route 534 (below) if you wish to avoid downtown Mount Vernon. However, there is a stop sign at the intersection if Fir Island Road and Best Road, and backups have occured at this spot.
